One Lousy New Year for Small Business

One Lousy New Year for Small Business

When midnight rolls around on Dec. 31, small business owners won’t be in the mood to celebrate. Instead of popping champagne corks, they’ll see their budgets burst as we go barreling off the fiscal cliff. Small businesses, entrepreneurs and inventors will be staring down at a $607 billion tax increase.

What’s worse is 25 million unemployed and underemployed Americans will have one big hangover on Jan. 1, when it is estimated that as a result of the fiscal cliff, unemployment will ...

Why is Obama Getting a Pass on Rising Gas Prices?

Why is Obama Getting a Pass on Rising Gas Prices?

Filling up your car’s gas tank is like going to Las Vegas. You are betting that you can top off the tank before your money runs out. Sticker shock? You bet.

On Sept. 24, AAA reported that the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.81, which is $0.29 more expensive than it was one year ago. When President Barack Obama took office, the average price of a gallon of gas was $1.85. The daily national average ...

When It Isn’t Good to be Number One

When It Isn’t Good to be Number One

America loves to be number one. But now we have the dubious distinction of being number one in a category that nobody wants: we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. The result is that the U.S. tax code continues to drive American employers to outsource jobs overseas.

Since 2001, Japan had levied the highest combined corporate tax rate among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries at 39.5 percent. They recently lowered their rate to 38.01 ...

Our President Should Think Like a CEO

Our President Should Think Like a CEO

The Wall Street Journal recently convened its annual CEO Council.

This year, some 100 CEOs gathered and concluded that the nation’s top five priorities are:

• create a globally competitive tax system;

• immigration policies should support innovation;

• improve human capital;

• upgrade our energy infrastructure;

• invest in R&D.

The question that must be asked is: Why doesn’t President Barack Obama and members of Congress come to these same conclusions? The answer is that the country needs to be run by people who understand business.

This ...
