Hiring Increases When Exports Rise

At one time, even though the economy was in severe distress, at least U.S. exports were on the rise. But now the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, through the Department of Commerce, announced that exports in July of $183.3 billion and imports of $225.3 billion resulted in a goods and services deficit of $42.0 billion, up from $41.9 billion in June.

And July exports were $1.9 billion less than June exports of $185.2 billion.

As I watched the speeches at the Democratic and Republican conventions, the idea of the American Dream was inserted into many of the presentations. Yet, the visions of the American Dream were inherently different.

Democratic speakers all discussed how government entitlements formed the foundation of their American Dream. Numerous grants and subsidies all played a key role in the pursuit of their future vocation.

I was honored to have been invited to appear in Tampa during the Republican National Convention on a panel together with Rep. Darrell Issa of California titled Government and Entrepreneurship. However, Hurricane Isaac caused the session to be cancelled.

Yet, the topic intrigued me. When discussing how entrepreneurship and government should intersect, the easy answer is … not at all. The last thing that entrepreneurs and small businesses need is more government interaction.
